Astronomy Blogs

Overview
AstronomyBlogs is a Weblog (sometimes called a blog or an on-line diary) hosting service. What that means is that we have created all the necessary tools to enable you as a member to post your writing and photography to the Internet from anywhere in the world, without having to do any programming yourself. There are no links between this server and a secondary server to establish, no messy file transfers, no need, really, to have another site at all (unless you want one). We have built enough customization into Astronomy Blogs to allow you to make a truly unique Weblog that fits with your style and adventure, and made it very easy to get started and establish a Web presence.

Some Features of AstronomyBlogs
  • Easy-to-use Web interface for adding, editing, and deleting journal entries
  • No special/custom hardware required
  • Create post-dated entries
  • Attach photos to entries (which are uploaded to the server, not merely linked to a second site)
  • Control title and directory (URL) of weblog
  • Allow visitors to leave comments
  • Theme manager allows for user-specified color scheme
  • Archival feature for backup "zip" files
  • No posting limits (12MB image storage capacity)
  • Listing, if desired, in our directory of AstronomyBlogs weblogs
  • Access to Member Forum for support and announcements

AstronomyBlogs first and foremost has been designed to be simple to use. A journal can be established and configured in just a few minutes, with posts only taking a few clicks to add. AstronomyBlogs provides the ability to include a table of contents, will order your posts by date and time, and can have multiple entries per day and per page and a host of other customizations.

In addition, we have designed AstronomyBlogs to be modular, with the ability to easily add new features when you need them.

In order to provide this service, we require that each blog display an unobtrusive block of advertising that has been designed for the template you've chosen. The ads are provided by Google, and as such will be related to the content of your blog posts. This ensures relevant advertising for your visitors and allows us the ability to give you a cost free membership. These ads can be removed, or used by members for their own purposes, if a premium membership is purchased.

PLEASE NOTE: AstronomyBlogs is NOT a classified advertising or personal ad system. If you set up a blog with this type of post, it simply will not be effective. There are other systems and message boards designed for this purpose. AstronomyBlogs does not promote your blog - that is the member's responsibility. Some advertising might also violate our terms & conditions and those accounts could be suspended.

Who Are We?
AstronomyBlogs has as it's engine X-Journal, which is the expedition support system of WebExpeditions.net, created in 1999 by Tim Harincar. WebExpeditions.net is a leading site featuring science and adventure expeditions of all sizes though its main page and archives. Through WebExpeditions.net, Tim has assisted in developing sites and implementing X-Journal for a wide variety of expeditions, starting with supporting Sky & Telescope Magazine's four field teams for the 1999 solar eclipse. The most recent supported expedition is the One World expedition led by Lonnie Dupre, taking place in summer 2005 to the north geographic pole. These and many other examples of teams using X-Journal can be found in the X-Journal main site.
