I am leaving for work @ 4:45 am. I look up at a gorgeous starred sky. A "star" is moving acrossed the sky. I say "star" with the quotations because obviously stars don't move, but the object was a tiny white dot. I thought it may be a satellite; and I ruled out a plane. As the object passed, it brightened so much my jaw literally hung open. I would estimate it enlarged several times as big as Venus appears on a "good" night. It then dimmed back down to its original "star" size, and it stayed on its trajectory as I watched it fade in to the distance. I know this sounds crazy. And my first and second entries sound crazy; but what I've seen is true. I have been a constant sky gazer since the late summer of 1996. This photo was taken with my home made 10" f/8 telescope and my Nikon d60. Astrophotography usually involves long exposures. One of two main types of astrophotography is "Eye piece projection", where your camera is mounted to your ocular. In order to do this type of photography I would need to buy or build a mechanism to move the scope and track the sky. Blurring or star trailing will occur in the photo due to movement of the Earth, very high magnification and an extremely small field of view. The other type is "Prime focus photography". Unlike eyepiece projection, Prime focus involves mounting the camera directly to the focuser of the telescope. The magnification is still huge but I was able to take this snap shot with a reasonable outcome. Even with a telescope as small as a 6-inch, the beautiful ring can be depicted from the vast distance of 2300 light-years. Here is how to find it. First, find Vega, one of the brightest stars in the sky. It should easily be visible with the naked eye. Second, find beta Lyra and gamma Lyra. If your area is teeming with light pollution, the provided diagram should help. Then, using your telescope, look halfway between the two stars, and M57 should be perceptible. Ring Nebula has also had an interesting history here on earth. It was discovered by Frenchman Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix in January 1779. Charles Messier, while searching the skies for a comet, also stumbled across it later the same month. He speculated that the nebula was formed of multiple faint stars that he was unable to resolve with his telescope. In 1800, Count Friedrich von Hahn discovered the faint star at the center of the nebula.
