Under the Desert Stars
Profile for Under the Desert Stars
Who Am I: Thomas Watson
Where Am I: Tucson, AZ USA
About Me: There are many people who live under desert stars. I'm part of a group in Tucson - the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association - that actually looks up at them on a regular basis. In addition to our own observing activities we spend a significant amount of time, as a club, sharing these wonders with others, especially with school-aged children. I am a gardener, naturalist, and sometime writer living in the northern portion of the Sonoran Desert. When I can find the time I haul out and assemble an 8 inch Newtonian reflector on an equatorial mount, a scope affectionately known as the Three Legged Newt. The 'newt and I are generalists. If it's in the night sky, we'll take a look at it, and if we like what we see we may even look twice. The Moon holds a special attraction, so it can be said that we lack a DSO bias and can find something to observe any night of the month that turns out to be clear. I hope you enjoy my recountings of nights under the desert stars.

Then again, aren't there those times when you just want to kick your heels up and just wander down the road just to see where you end up? It could be wondrous, scary or just plain weird or stupid... Maybe wretched and terrible or boring... But it could always be sweet and unexpected or unexplainable. - Gary Shigeo Kamikubo 10/17/06
