Observation of PGC 54559 - Hoag's Object
06/24/2008

Object: 54559
Deepsky Catalog: PGC - Catalog of Principal Galaxies
Log Type: Default

Date Observed: 06/06/2008
Time Observed: __:__UT

Observing Location: Prude Ranch, Fort Davis, Texas, USA
Object Rating: C
Primary Equipment Used: 30inch Dobsonian
Power/Magnification Used: 430x

Transparency/Seeing: Deepsky Extremely Clear / Deepsky Mostly Stable
Detailed Observing Notes:
A ring galaxy in Serpens (Caput), known as Hoag's Object. While the core was visible, the ring itself took a while to appear. I had to stare at the field, using averted vision, for ages until one part appeared then vanished, another portion appeared then vanished and then, eventually, the whole ring popped into view before disappearing just as quickly.

Trying this out
06/13/2008

While at the Texas Star Party last week I bought a rather good piece of software called 'Deepsky' by Steven Tuma and Dean Williams.

Among the features, it lets you upload your observations to the net, but unfortunately you can only do this via 'Astronomy Blogs'. This is no slight on Astronomy Blogs, which is very good, but I use Blogspot for my visual deep sky observing blog and a choice would have been nice.

However, maybe I'll use this one purely for observations and just use Blogspot for general deep sky posts? I'll see how it goes.
